چکیده

We report the discovery of J0121+0025, an extremely luminous and young star-forming galaxy (M_UV = -24.11, log[L_Lya / erg s^-1] 43.8) at z 3.244 showing copious Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage (f_esc,abs ~ 40%). High signal-to-noise ratio rest-frame UV spectroscopy with Gran Telescopio Canarias reveals a high significance (7.9 sigma) emission below limit (< 912A), flux density level f_900A 0.78 +/- 0.10 uJy, strong P-Cygni in wind lines OVI 1033A, NV 1240A CIV 1550A that are indicative age starburst (<10 Myr). The spectrum is rich stellar photospheric features, for which significant contribution AGN these wavelengths ruled out. Low-ionization ISM absorption also detected, but weak (EW0 1A) show large residual intensities, suggesting clumpy geometry gas non-unity covering fraction or highly ionized ISM. foreground contamination to LyC signal unlikely. Deep optical Spitzer/IRAC 4.5um imaging spectral energy distribution J0121+0025 dominated by starburst, log(M*/Msun) 9.9 0.1 SFR 981 232 Msun yr^-1. most powerful emitter known among population. such leaking radiation suggests photons can escape sources wide range luminosities not restricted faintest ones as previously thought. These findings might shed further light on role starbursts cosmic reionization.

The Direct Detection of Lyman-continuum Emission from Star-forming Galaxies

We present the results of rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of a sample of 14 z ∼ 3 star-forming galaxies in the SSA22a field. These spectra are characterized by unprecedented depth in the Lyman-continuum region. For the first time, we have detected escaping ionizing radiation from individual galaxies at high redshift, with two of the 14 objects showing significant emission belo...

Lyman Alpha Emitters in Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Ii. Uv Continuum Luminosity Function and Equivalent Width Distribution

We present theoretical predictions of UV continuum luminosity function (UV LF) and Lyα equivalent width (EW) distribution of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) in the framework of the hierarchical clustering model of galaxy formation. The model parameters about LAEs were determined by fitting to the observed Lyα LF at z = 5.7 in our previous study, and the fit indicates that extinction of Lyα photons ...

Uv Hst Spectroscopy of Star-forming Galaxies

to be published in the " Starburst Activity in Galaxies " proceedings by the RevMexAstronAstrofis. ABSTRACT HST spectroscopical observations of 8 HII galaxies are reported. Lyα emission was detected in 4 of them. We find that it is the velocity structure of the gas which is the main determining factor for the escape of the Lyα photons, and not the abundance of dust. The rest of the sample shows...

Sbs 0335–052w: the Lowest-metallicity Star-forming Galaxy Known

We present 4-meter Kitt Peak telescope and 6.5-meter MMT spectrophotometry of the extremely low-metallicity galaxy SBS 0335–052W, the western companion of the blue compact dwarf galaxy SBS 0335–052E. These observations have been combined with published 10-meter Keck data to derive for the brightest region of SBS 0335– 052W an oxygen abundance 12 + log O/H = 7.12 ± 0.03. This makes SBS 0335–052W...

Detections of Lyman Continuum from Star-forming Galaxies at Z ∼ 3 through Subaru/suprime-cam Narrow-band Imaging

Knowing the amount of ionizing photons from young star-forming galaxies is of particular importance to understanding the reionization process. Here we report initial results of Subaru/Suprime-Cam deep imaging observation with a special narrow-band filter to optimally trace ionizing radiation from galaxies at z > 3. The unique wide field-of-view of Suprime-Cam enabled us to search for ionizing p...
